Intense Suspense: Chills and Thrills

Darkling
This is a psychological thriller by Peter Kuijpers from the Netherlands. It opens showing the adults of a household leaving for a party while the self-confident 12-year-old daughter is left at home. Things seem to be going well for the girl until she hears ominous sounds echoing through the house. Doors slam, floorboards creek. With only a field hockey stick for protection, viewers will be hiding along with the little girl in the closet. The masterful cinematography will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Red Rain
Matthijs van Heijiningen Jr., directed this thriller from the Netherlands. A young woman's car runs out of gas in a dark and stormy night. Fortunately, a motel sign appears in the dark, but the mysterious receptionist indicates that something must be wrong there...

Horsehair
In this surreal black comedy from Scotland, director and writer Duncan Nicoll shows us what happens if you spend too much time in your armchair. Let this film serve as a warning to couch potatoes everywhere -- you will never look at your furniture that same way again. Horsehair appeared at Edinburg Film Festival and London Film Festival.

Panic
Director, producer and actor Omid Nooshin shot this suspenseful English short film that starts off at a secluded gas station. While a woman pays for the gas, her car gets stolen. The thief unwillingly becomes the kidnapper of her child. Full of fear and energy, the mother flags down a passing driver, unaware that he is, in fact, the architect of the crime. Before the final draft of this film was completed, an almost identical incident happened in real life. Nooshin contacted the mother, who eventually became the creative advisor on the film. Panic has appeared at BBC British Short Film Festival, Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, Greenwich Film Festival and Rotterdam Film Festival.

The Shower (La Douche)
This French-Lebanese film was directed by Michel Kammoun, who was born in Sierra Leone and went to cinema school in Paris. A man enters his bathroom and everything seems fine until the shower takes on a life of its own. Be careful -- this short film might convince you that hygiene isn't that important after all.
