Robert Redford narrates Global Focus II: The New Environmentalists, the second annual installment of a half hour program that features intimate portraits of seven passionate and dedicated activists. These are true environmental heroes who have put themselves between corrupt governments, greedy corporations and other intimidating adversaries. Their goal: safeguarding the Earth's natural resources from shortsighted exploitation and unbridled pollution.

This year's stories feature Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere; The Congo, scene of some of Africa's most brutal atrocities in recent years; Kazhakastan, where nuclear fallout continues to plague its beleaguered citizens; Honduras, home to a Catholic priest who has put himself in harm's way to protect his country's natural resources; Mexico's Sierra Nevada mountains and the struggles of the Tarahumara Indians to control their land; and a battle in Romania between a small environmental group and the multinational gold mining industry.

Global Focus illustrates how ordinary people are affecting extraordinary change. The New Environmentalists employ a formidable array of weapons to wage their battles. Blackboards, picket signs, solar panels, pamphlets, garden hoes, song, dance and sheer determination are among their many resources.

Global Focus is presented by KQED Public Broadcasting, San Francisco through NETA.

Global Focus is funded by the Goldman Environmental Prize, the international award for grassroots environmentalists. www.goldmanprize.org
