Robert Redford narrates Global Focus III: The New Environmentalists, the third annual installment of a half hour program featuring intimate portraits of six passionate and dedicated activists. These are true environmental heroes who have put themselves between corrupt governments, greedy corporations and other intimidating adversaries. Their goal: safeguarding the Earth's natural resources from shortsighted exploitation and unbridled pollution. Global Focus III airs Sunday, April 22 at 5:30 pm on KQED 9 (check local listings for date and time).
This year's stories feature Liberia, a resource rich country devastated by 14 years of civil war and rampant corruption; Papua New Guinea, where industrial logging has severely depleted and damaged tropical forests; China, whose rapid industrialization can wreak havoc on its fragile environment; Brazil, where people of the tropical forest must coexist with their natural environment; Ukraine, whose government ignored environmental laws and began construction on the world's most valuable wetlands to create a canal; and Kentucky, where a local man successfully convinced the Pentagon not to incinerate stockpiles of chemical weapons stored in multiple locations around the United States.
Global Focus illustrates how ordinary people are affecting extraordinary change. The New Environmentalists go up against formidable opponents, but have remarkable success in their individual campaigns to better their local environments and the planet as a whole.
Global Focus is presented by KQED Public Broadcasting, San Francisco through NETA.
Global Focus is funded by the Goldman Environmental Prize, the international award for grassroots environmentalists. www.goldmanprize.org
