KQED Public Radio's The California Report

KQED Public Radio, in collaboration with public radio stations throughout California, launched The California Report, a statewide radio news program, in October, 1995. Distributed by satellite from the KQED Public Radio studios in San Francisco, The California Report provides daily coverage of issues, trends and public policy decisions affecting California and its diverse population. It is carried by 25 public radio stations from Arcata to San Diego, in addition to more than 25 public radio station translators and repeaters across the state. Many local station reporters are regular contributors. The program also receives daily reports from its satellite bureaus in Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Jose.

The daily edition of The California Report is a 9-minute morning program. There is also a Friday afternoon edition, a half-hour magazine offering in-depth analysis of the week's top news stories, sound-rich radio excursions and commentaries from voices around the state.

Health Dialogues, a special series produced by the staff of The California Report, engages listeners in an ongoing discussion of California healthcare issues that are emerging across the state. The series generates dialogue among communities, healthcare providers and policymakers.

The centerpiece of the Health Dialogues series is a monthly, one-hour call-in program. Host Scott Shafer moderates a discussion between a panel of experts and listeners who call in toll-free from anywhere in the state to voice their opinions in this public forum. Topics range from the state of hospital solvency to health literacy to drug abuse treatment policies and programs. The monthly call-in programs are complemented by special reports on health care during the morning edition of The California Report, as well as by local programming produced and aired by partner stations throughout the state. Listeners also can visit the program's Web site for further information and archived audio programs at kqed.org/tcr.

Funding for The California Report is provided by The James Irvine Foundation, The California Endowment, the Stuart Foundation, Inktomi, TIAA-CREF, the California Department of Conservation and the members of KQED Public Radio.
