| KQED Public Radio's HEALTH DIALOGUES to Focus on Local Community Health Initiatives |
Special Broadcast Examines Community Responses to Local Healthcare Needs around the State
San Francisco, California, February 13, 2002 -- The second installment of "Health Dialogues," The California Report's series of statewide health care call-in shows, features a look at grassroots community groups striving to improve public health and wellness. As the public safety net becomes increasingly tattered and the numbers of uninsured Californians soar, these local groups are forming their own organizations to meet the needs of low-income and diverse communities through innovative, culturally appropriate programs. As public funding for community programs face continued cutbacks, these grass roots initiatives have come to play a vital role in addressing residents' healthcare needs.
"Communities Helping Themselves" opens with a special report on a Salinas Community group working to develop an innovative Promotores de Salud (Health Promoters) program with local farm workers. The program trains farm workers to be liaisons between their community and the established health care system in an effort to improve community medical services for everything from prenatal care to pesticide exposure. After the report, host Scott Shafer will moderate a conversation between panel experts and listeners, who can call-in toll free (800-811-6830) from anywhere in the state to voice their opinions in a public forum. They will discuss the changing role of community-based organizations as the health care system becomes increasingly complicated and the state’s population more diverse. Panelists include Mitchell H. Katz, MD, the director of health at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and Janette Robinson Flint, the executive director of Black Women for Wellness in Los Angeles. Listeners around the state can tune in to their local public radio station on Wednesday, February 20 at 7 p.m. (check local listings).
"Health Dialogues" engages listeners in an ongoing discussion of California health care issues that are important to the state's most underserved people -- children, low-income residents, minorities, people with disabilities, immigrants, and rural and migrant worker communities.
