| KQED Public Radio To Begin Broadcasts on 89.3 FM in Sacramento |
New Station to be Identified as KQEI-FM, North Highlands/Sacramento
San Francisco, May 9, 2003 -- KQED Public Radio will begin broadcasts on KQEI-FM North Highlands/Sacramento on 89.3 FM at midnight, Monday May 12. Family Stations of Oakland, a religious broadcaster, previously held the frequency. KQED and Family Stations finalized KQED’s purchase of the station on Friday, May 9.
KQED will transmit its 24-hour news and information program service over the new frequency for listeners in the Sacramento area. KQED 88.5 FM previously is already heard in and around Sacramento, and the addition of KQEI 89.3 FM North Highlands/Sacramento will significantly improve radio reception in that area. KQED Public Radio programming on 89.3 FM will include local weather and traffic reports and news of the Sacramento region.
Highlights of KQED Public Radio's award-winning program service, which will be heard on KQEI-FM in Sacramento, include The California Report (a daily statewide program hosted by Scott Shafer); KQED Radio News (morning and afternoon drivetime newscasts with Kathryn Baron and Keven Guillory); Forum (a two-hour public affairs program hosted weekdays by Michael Krasny and Angie Coiro); Pacific Time (a weekly program on Pacific Rim news with Nguyen Qui Duc); and nationally syndicated programs from National Public Radio and Public Radio International.
"The opportunity to bring KQED Public Radio's 24-hour news and information service to more listeners in the Sacramento area is very exciting," said Jo Anne Wallace, vice president and general manager. "We hope that KQED's programs on 89.3 FM, complementing the excellent public radio services currently available in Sacramento, will draw even more listeners to public radio overall in the Sacramento community."
In addition to 89.3 FM in Sacramento, KQED Public Radio will continue to operate 88.5 FM in San Francisco, 88.3 FM in Santa Rosa, and 88.1 FM in Martinez.
Historically ranked among the top-rated public radio stations in the nation, KQED currently is the most-listened-to public radio station in the country with more than 746,000 listeners each week. Reaching listeners as far north as Ukiah and the North Coast, as far south as Monterey Bay and the Central Coast, and as far east as the Sierra Nevada, KQED 88.5 FM broadcasts at 110,000 watts of power with one of the strongest signals for public radio in California. The purchase of 89.3 FM adds an additional 3,100 watts of power transmitted to the Sacramento region. KQED Public Radio also can be heard over the Internet with live streaming at KQED.org.
KQED Public Broadcasting operates KQED Public Television 9, one of the nation's most-watched public television station during prime-time, and Digital Television 9, Northern California's first digital public television signal; KQED Public Radio, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation with an award-winning news and public affairs program service (88.5 FM in San Francisco and 89.3 FM in Sacramento); KQED.org, which harnesses the power of the Internet to bring KQED to communities across the Web; and KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources.
