KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM Engages in Special Pledge Day to Support Sister Station WNYC-FM/New York in Wake of Destroyed Facilities During September 11 Attacks

Station Receives FCC Waiver to Fundraise January 24 on Behalf of NPR Member Station

San Francisco, California, January 17, 2002 -- KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM will conduct a special on-air pledge day on Thursday, January 24 for WNYC-FM in New York. WNYC lost its FM transmitter and antenna during the attacks on the World Trade Center towers, but has been able to establish a short-term transmitter and antenna, and has operated from a temporary site on reduced power. WNYC lost significant budgeted revenue in the weeks following September 11, and rebuilding the transmitter facility will be costly.

"We are very pleased to come to the aid of our sister station in New York. Our radio, membership, marketing, volunteer, legal and development staffs are eager to assist in any way we can," noted Jo Anne Wallace, vice president and general manager for radio. "Our colleagues on the East Coast, like ourselves, have been enormously saddened by national tragedy, but they have continued to bring their audience up-to-the-minute news and other important programming. I cannot imagine how difficult it has been for WNYC to operate under such conditions."

The Federal Communications Commission has granted a waiver for KQED Public Radio to fundraise on behalf of another nonprofit organization. KQED Public Radio will continue with its own on-air winter pledge drive January 25 through February 8–or until it meets its $1.2 million goal. KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM conducts three on-air pledge drives per year to cover operating expenses.

Consistently ranked among the top-rated public radio audiences in the nation, KQED is currently the most-listened-to public radio station in the country, reaching 600,000 listeners each week. Reaching listeners as far north as the North Coast, as far south as the Central Coast and Monterey Bay and as far east as the Sierra Nevada, KQED has one of the strongest signals for public radio within the state of California. In 2000, KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM began live streaming of its programs on KQED's Web site, KQED.org.

KQED Public Broadcasting operates KQED Public Television 9, one of the nation's most-watched public television station during prime-time, and Digital Television 9, Northern California's first digital public television signal; KQED Public Radio, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation with an award-winning news and public affairs program service (88.5 FM in San Francisco and 89.3 FM in Sacramento); KQED.org, which harnesses the power of the Internet to bring KQED to communities across the Web; and KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources.
