I Can't Marry You: A One-Hour Special About the Legalization of Marriage for Same-Sex Couples

Part of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month Programming

Presented by KQED and Distributed by APT

San Francisco, California -- I Can't Marry You is a timely, one-hour program about the issue of legalizing marriage for same-sex couples in America. Exploring the lives of twenty Gay and Lesbian couples in long-term, committed relationships (ranging from 10 to 55 years), this special documentary will air on Sunday, June 27, at 6:00 p.m. (repeating Wednesday, June 30, at 11:00 p.m.) on KQED Public Television 9, as part of KQED's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month programming.

Ellen DeGeneres's mother, Betty DeGeneres, narrates I Can't Marry You, which has the distinction of being the first-ever documentary on Gay marriage to be aired on national television. The topic has become one of the most hotly debated civil rights issues of the day, with national headlines devoted to the latest developments in the courtroom and its place in the upcoming presidential election. Interviewing a diverse group of couples, producer/director Catherine Gray portrays couples from big cities to small towns, of different ethnic and religious backgrounds, from a variety of professions, and of disparate ages. The overall picture is one that endeavors to smash media stereotypes and display the real diversity of Gay and Lesbian couples in America.

By introducing these same-sex couples and their real-life stories, I Can't Marry You reveals how these Americans go through their daily lives, how they "came out" and how they are affected by the legal obstacles they face as unmarried couples.

In the spring of 2004, Catherine Gray will tour the country, holding screenings at Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) centers and theaters, where she is promoting the national television release of the program.

I Can't Marry You is produced by FYI Productions. Catherine Gray is the producer. It is presented by KQED and distributed by APT. The underwriters are RSVP Vacations, Genre Magazine, India Point Project and Olivia Cruises and Resorts.
