KQED Public Television Receives National Emmy Nominations for Local and International Programming "And Then One Night: The Making of 'Dead Man Walking'" and FRONTLINE/World co-production "Leasing the Rain" Receive Prestigious Nominations from The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the Production

San Francisco, California, July 21, 2003 -- The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized KQED Public Television with a 2003 News and Documentary Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Cultural and Artistic Programming. The nomination was received for KQED's production And Then One Night: The Making of "Dead Man Walking". KQED's co-production with WGBH NOW with Bill Moyers, Leasing the Rain, also received a nomination for Outstanding Coverage of a Continuing News Story in a News Magazine.

And Then One Night was produced in 2000-01 in collaboration with San Francisco Opera's world premiere production of Dead Man Walking, by Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally. Based on Sister Helen Prejean's award-winning book which inspired the movie of the same name, the opera addresses the controversial issue of capital punishment. KQED's compelling one-hour documentary offers viewers an inside look at the making of a contemporary American opera, while asking them to consider the importance and necessity of the death penalty in America.

And Then One Night premiered locally on KQED in 2001 and nationally on PBS in January of 2002. The program has already received numerous accolades including a 2001 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Award for best Cultural Affairs Program from the San Francisco/Northern California Chapter.

Leasing the Rain, an investigative piece about the intersection of global freshwater shortages and efforts to privatize utilities in third world countries, was co-produced in 2002 by FRONTLINE/World for NOW With Bill Moyers. Frontline/World is a series focused on the global community and developed by FRONTLINE producers in conjunction with public television stations KQED San Francisco and WGBH Boston.

Jack Walsh and Kate Gaitley are the executive producers of And Then One Night: The Making of "Dead Man Walking." Linda Schaller is the producer. Peter Calabrese is the managing editor.

David Murdock is the producer of Leasing the Rain. William Finnegan is the correspondent and Amanda Zinoman is the editor.

The News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented at a black-tie dinner and ceremony on Tuesday evening, September 3, 2003 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel New York City. For more information please visit emmyonline.org.
