Traci Eckels Named Vice President of Development for KQED Public Broadcasting

Fundraising Leader Pivotal in Completing $70 Million Campaign for the Future

San Francisco, California, August 8, 2002 -- In his first senior management appointment since becoming KQED president and CEO in June, Jeff Clarke has promoted Traci A. Eckels to vice president of development, effective immediately. Eckels was previously the interim director of development. In her new position, Eckels is charged with leading KQED Public Broadcasting in annual major gifts, foundations, planned giving and the KQED Campaign for the Future.

"One of my first duties at KQED was to forge ahead with our KQED Campaign for the Future and meet with major donors," noted Clarke. "I have been impressed with Traci's leadership in stewarding the Campaign, providing her fundraising expertise and lending a vision for KQED. This promotion is very well-deserved."

Eckels has spent the last two years -- since June 2000 -- at KQED, first as major gifts officer, then as director of the Campaign for the Future, and most recently, as interim director of development. During her tenure, she has worked closely with the Campaign Cabinet, Board of Directors, senior managers and development staff in strategically cultivating and soliciting prospects for the Campaign for the Future -- resulting in gifts and pledges of more than $7 million.

Prior to coming to KQED, Eckels served as the director of development/senior development officer for the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies at San Francisco State University in Tiburon, California (1998-2000); the director of development at the YWCA of Seattle (1994-1998); and the director of special projects and special gifts officer for the School of Law (Boalt Hall) at the University of California at Berkeley (1989-1994). She is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, holding a bachelor's degree in political economy of industrial societies. Eckels resides in El Cerrito, California.

In response to the unfunded federal mandate to convert television broadcast technology from analog to digital, KQED Public Broadcasting has embarked on the KQED Campaign for the Future. The initiative is an effort to secure funding from individuals, corporations and foundations for the conversion to digital technology for television and radio; the development and production of new and existing television and radio programs; and transition KQED's infrastructure to move toward the digital future. The KQED Campaign for the Future also encourages broad-based strategic partnerships with other organizations throughout the region. The Campaign stands currently at $52.4 million in gifts and pledges, with an additional $2 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation.

KQED operates KQED Public Television 9, the nation's most-watched public television station, and Digital Television 30, Northern California's only public television digital signal; KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation; the KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources; and KQED.org, which harnesses the power of the Internet to bring KQED to communities across the Web.
