| KQED Web Sites Earn Three Nominations For Prestigious Webby Awards -- The Most Nominations Of Any PBS Station |
April 14, 2005, San Francisco, CA --- KQED Interactive (www.kqed.org) is the recipient of three nominations for the 9th Annual Webby Awards. The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence in Web design, creativity, usability, and functionality, presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. The nominations are for KQED.org's You Decide in the category of Politics, and FRONTLINE/World for both News and Best Practices categories.
- You Decide (www.kqed.org/youdecide), produced and created by Sean Fagan; written and researched by Melissa Joulwan. You Decide is an online poll that encourages users to look at opposite points of view in today’s biggest political and cultural debates, and is nationally syndicated to PBS stations and popular media sites including Salon.com. In 2004, You Decide won awards for Best Non-Commercial Online Journalism from The Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet Golden Dot Awards; and the Grand Prize in the 2004 Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism.
- FRONTLINE/World (www.pbs.org/frontlineworld), produced by Angela Morgenstern; designed by Susan Harris of Fluent Studios; Web site produced by KQED and WGBH in Boston. As the Web site for FRONTLINE/World, a national public television series spun off of FRONTLINE, that turns its lens on the global community, the site publishes original Web reporting related to world news, interactive features aimed at helping American audiences better understand the world around them, and reporter-driven stories. The site has been recognized by a number of prestigious prizes, including the Columbia University/Online News Association Online Journalism Awards (General Excellence in Online Journalism/Affiliated), Editor and Publisher (EPpy Award for Best Design of an Internet Service/under one million), and has also been nominated for Webbys three years in a row -- every year of the FRONTLINE/World site's existence.
In addition to these nominations, three KQED.org-produced sites are recognized for their standard of excellence as Webby Worthy Selections. Fewer than 20% of the 4,000 entries submitted to the Awards were deemed Webby Worthy. While these sites are not nominees, the Webby Worthy selections are a significant achievement signifying an outstanding caliber of work.
The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences is an intellectually diverse organization that includes members such as musicians Beck and David Bowie, Internet inventor Vint Cerf, "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, "Smart Mobs" author Howard Rheingold, and Oracle chairman Larry Ellison. The 8th Annual Webby Awards received entries from 36 countries and generated over 100 million media impressions.
Winners will be announced on May 3, 2005 and awards presented at a gala celebration in June at New York City's Gotham Hall. The Webby Awards presents two honors in each category: The Webby Award and The People's Voice Award. While members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences select the nominees for both awards, the online community determines the winners of The People's Voice Awards by voting for the best sites in each category. Voters can register online and make their choices before April 29 at www.webbyawards.com/peoplesvoice.
KQED Interactive develops content and applications for digital platforms including the Web, interactive television and mobile devices. KQED's Web site, KQED.org, is one of the most-visited public broadcasting station sites in the nation.
