Whales Head to Sea
After two weeks of swimming lost in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, a mother whale and her calf yesterday headed for for the Pacific Ocean. They were last spotted near Tiburon, just a few miles from the Golden Gate Bridge and the open sea.  more

San Jose Wrestles with Crippling Budget Shortfall
The city of San Jose continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the Bay Area, with a population soon expected to pass the 1 million mark. But since the dot-com bust, the city has struggled every year under a crippling budget deficit and has balanced the budget through temporary hiring freezes. This week, San Jose officials will be grappling with a $16 million shortfall, and city officials have to come up with a balanced budget in time to start the new fiscal year July 1.  more
