Tourism and the American Landscape
In the late 19th century, influential artists traveled extensively in the U.S. painting picturesque landscapes. The paintings -- along with guidebooks, travel-related photographs and novels -- prompted a new and burgeoning tourist industry. Many of these works are collected in the exhibition "Frederic Church, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Moran: Tourism and the American Landscape" at Stanford's Cantor Arts Center.  more

Built in 1941, the Cow Palace in Daly City has been host to The Beatles, The Grateful Dead and speeches by John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower. It continues to be the venue for the Grand National Rodeo and many other events. Now, the arena may be torn down for redevelopment.  more
