Giant Coffee and Bagel Exit Palo Alto

The giant coffee cup and bagel that that ran afoul of Palo Alto’s code enforcement has found a new home at Izzy’s Brooklyn Bagels’ East Palo Alto store.

The display created a stir late last year when it showed up on the roof the Palo Alto Izzy’s. City code prohibits rooftop signs.

Izzy’s owner Israel Rind now says he never intended to skirt Palo Alto regulations.

“We intended it for East Palo Alto,” Rind said. "We applied for a permit and the permit took a long time in coming. Meanwhile we received the cup and the bagel so basically we stored it on top of Izzy’s."

The pop art-like installation was created by the artist Mohamed "Slim" Soumah. When Palo Alto authorities stepped in, the display became a rallying point for some local residents and artists.

Rind says the roof was just the only safe place he could think of to store it.
