Early Warning System for Earthquakes?

This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. It was centered in Santa Cruz County and killed 63 people during those few seconds of intense shaking. What if there had been a short heads-up before the quake struck, an alert like other countries have?

Santa Cruz After Loma Prieta

Classic images of the Loma Prieta earthquake are mostly associated with San Francisco and Oakland. But the quake caused $6 billion in damage throughout the region. Its epicenter was located 10 miles from Santa Cruz, where large sections of downtown were reduced to rubble.

Lessons from Loma Prieta

Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, which killed 63 people, damaged 18,000 homes, triggered the collapse of major Bay Area transportation arteries and caused up to $10 billion in business losses. Since then, state officials and disaster experts have been working to prevent such losses in future quakes. We discuss the lessons learned from Loma Prieta.

West Oakland Remembers Loma Prieta

West Oakland was the site of the deadliest event of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Forty-two people died when the upper deck of the Cypress freeway collapsed onto the lower deck. The Great ShakeOut

More than 1 million people in Northern California took part in the Great California ShakeOut today. The event, staged as we near the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, featured a mass stop, drop and cover exercise. It was designed to raise awareness and to prompt public agencies and private companies to take a look at their emergency plans.

Predicting the Next Big One

Last month's devastating earthquakes in Indonesia and Samoa were a brutal reminder of the sudden force of seismic shifts. That hits close to home here in the Bay Area. Twenty years ago, the Loma Prieta quake killed 63 people and caused $6 billion in property damage. Japan and Mexico have earthquake early warning systems, to save lives if not property. But until now, federal funding for a system here in the states has lagged behind.
