California Bonds Attract Investors

Individual investors warmed up to California Bonds this week -- snapping up most of about three and a half billion dollars in bonds. State officials hope the rebound will last for another bond offering next Wednesday. Peter Jon Shuler reports.

California exports are still in the doldrums, but new Commerce Department figures released today show Northern California may be recovering faster than Southern California. Also, only 10 days into October, skiiers and snowboarders are hitting the slopes at one California resort.

FBI On Trail Of Online Scammers

FBI agents continue to sweep five Southern California counties for suspects in a massive international cyberscam. The case involves 100 accused conspirators in the United States and Egypt who allegedly tried to steal personal information from thousands of US bank customers.

eBay Sales Up / Home Sales to Dip Slightly

Things are looking up for merchants who use eBay. The San Jose-based online retailer's sales rose in August and again in September. Also, single family home sales will drop slightly next year according to a new forecast from the California Association of Realtors.

From Corporate To Nonprofit

The "Serve America Act" which Congress passed earlier this year is intended to draw more Americans into public service. Tucked into that legislation is a commitment to expand a pilot program developed right here in California. The Silicon Valley Encore Initiative pairs retired corporate executives with nonprofits who could use their business expertise. With unemployment topping 12 percent in California, more laid off workers are at risk of losing their health insurance. A federal subsidy included in the stimulus bill has helped some of those workers hold onto their coverage. But the help will run out soon.

Poison Control System Faces Closure

California's Poison Control System is on life support. The 24-7 operation lost half of its funding in the new state budget, and poison control officials say if they don't find an additional $6 million soon, the system will have to close.
