Awaiting Sentencing in the Johannes Mehserle Trial

We're still awaiting a sentence in the Johannes Mehserle manslaughter trial. Mehserle is a former BART Police officer convicted of shooting a passenger, Oscar Grant, as he lay unarmed on a train platform. Mehserle faces up to 14 years in prison.

Oakland police are preparing for possible unrest Friday when a judge is scheduled to sentence former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle. In July, protests and looting broke out when a jury convicted Mehserle of involuntary manslaughter for killing Oscar Grant.

This afternoon officials at BART will dedicate a new department inspired by the Johannes Mehserle scandal. Today officials will christen the new Office of the Independent Police Auditor as part of a larger effort to improve police procedures, and investigate complaints about officers.

Oakland Suing Mehserle Verdict Looters

The City of Oakland is suing four people arrested for looting and vandalism while protesting the Johannes Mehserle verdict. The city will use video evidence from the unrest that followed the verdict. Mehserle is a former BART police officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for fatally shooting Oscar Grant on New Year's Day 2009. He faces up to 14 years in state prison when he is sentenced next Friday.

ILWU Plans Rally for Oscar Grant Saturday

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has called a rally in downtown Oakland to call for prison time for former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle. He's awaiting his sentence for manslaughter in the 2009 killing of Oscar Grant.
