Kathleen Acord, 1961-2009

June 15, 2009  — It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our former Director of Education Network, Kathleen Acord. Kathleen died in an automobile collision on Sunday, June 14.

Kathleen served in the field of educational outreach at KQED from 1992 until early 2009. Her work included the creation and management of the station's Ready To Learn initiative, where she forged strong community partnerships and extended outreach efforts into Spanish and Chinese-speaking communities throughout the Bay Area. She was promoted to manager of KQED Education Network in 2000 and then to division director in 2002, which was then comprised of three distinct departments serving early childhood, K-12, and the community at large through innovative multimedia resources and services. Kathleen was a valued and respected presenter at local and national education and PBS conferences, and consulted on various national early childhood education initiatives for PBS. She served two terms on the PBS Ready To Learn Advisory Committee and one term on the PBS TeacherSource Advisory Group. Kathleen was also a consultant for Sesame Workshop and regularly collaborated on the development and writing of national project materials.

Kathleen received her B.A. in Broadcast Communication Arts from San Francisco State University and completed Early Childhood Education coursework. Kathleen has been recognized for her service and contributions by Fred Rogers and Family Communications, Inc., American Women in Radio and Television, and the Child Care Coordinating Council of San Mateo County. Her dedication to public education, and especially her commitment to early childhood development, as well as her daily grace and goodwill will be remembered and missed by her friends and former colleagues here at KQED and KTEH.
