Special Project Editor - Part Time

Position Summary

The Special Project Editor, part time, is responsible for coordinating production of special coverage of California governance for The California Report. Coordinates and edits monthly special reports. With the Senior Producer, The California Report, guides ongoing coverage of California governance. Assists in planning coverage of the 2010 California gubernatorial election. Proposes and executes additional special coverage of governance issues on air and online. Develops plan for substantive online content concerning California governance, including social engagement outreach.

Position Accountabilities

1. Edits and oversees production of special monthly reports on California governance.
2. Assigns governance stories in coordination with the Senior Producer, The California Report.
3. Coordinates edited stories with production.
4. Assists in maintaining work flow production documentation and other record keeping.
5. Coordinates online presentation and reporting, in collaboration with the Senior Editor, Online Content, and appropriate Interactive staff.
6. Coordinates social engagement outreach efforts to support reporting on governance issues.

Position Requirements

1. Four to six years broadcast production, news desk assignment or equivalent news operation experience
2. Excellent knowledge of California's government structures, governance and institutions.
3. Excellent reporting, writing, editing and radio story organization skills.
4. Experience as radio assignments editor.
5. Excellent knowledge of sound editing and digital radio production techniques.
6. Excellent news judgment.
7. Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
8. Excellent communications skills.
9. Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards.
10. Ability to research using databases and other digital tools.
11. Demonstrated knowledge of online news platforms, tools and production.
12. Ability to work under deadline pressures.
13. Demonstrated ability to work well with both veteran and new reporters.
14. BA degree in journalism, broadcast, mass communications or comparable media curriculum


Knowledge/Experience Desired

1. Working knowledge of a range of significant public affairs issues and subjects such as government and politics, environment, economy and business, education, health, immigration and legal affairs.
2. Experience in multimedia story-telling - ability to edit online and multimedia content.
3. Track record of creative feature assignments.
4. Experience working in a demographically diverse news environment strongly desired.
