Lead Janitor

Position Summary

Utility Maintenance Employees provide timely, consistent, and efficient services for the benefit of their co-workers by performing janitorial and custodial tasks, setting up for meetings and events, moving furniture, and similar duties. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. There are opportunities for overtime work in support of events on weekends. In addition, the lead worker on the shift coordinates work assignments, monitors cleanliness of the building, and documents task assignments for the team on the housekeeping shift.

Position Accountabilities

  • Assign cleaning routes and daily routine and additional tasks
  • Review task checklist with employees at the beginning and conclusion of the shift
  • Weekly spot-check inspection with Facilities Director
  • Schedule staggered breaks and lunches for crew and ensure that all breaks and lunches are taken
  • At the conclusion of the shift, verify that all restrooms are cleaned and stocked
  • At the conclusion of the shift verify that all time sheets have been completed
  • Turn in completed task schedules for the day
  • Re-distribute workload as needed when one or more crew members are absent
  • Work collaboratively with the Maintenance Lead to determine overtime assignments
  • Act as point of contact for housekeeping, maintenance or event support during assigned shift
  • Ensure that all pre-planned event's facilities needs are met
  • Check in with Maintenance Lead at the beginning of the shift
  • Leave notes/instructions regarding PM shift activities that might impact AM shift
  • Report challenges and issues to Facilities Director at the beginning of the next shift
  • Provide skills training and task guidance for all crew members as needed
  • Clean assigned areas including: Stripping and mopping of tile and linoleum floors; Cleaning and shampooing carpets; Floor polishing; Vacuuming; Dusting furniture; Window washing
  • Other related duties including: provide audience and meeting setup including but not limited to: tables, chairs, lecterns and easels; storing Facilities equipment and furniture; moving items to and from storage areas

    Position Requirements

    1. Previous experience in a lead or supervisory role required
    2. Must be able to use control programs that operate critical facilities systems and equipment
    3. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs
    4. Knowledge of all janitorial/custodial functions including mopping/stripping/waxing and buffing as well as proper restroom and office cleaning procedures
    5. Must have excellent interpersonal skills
    6. Must possess and maintain current a valid CA drivers license with a good driving record
    7. Experience as a lead or supervisor in a union setting
