Oakland Budget Crisis

Download audio (MP3)

Oakland's current $85 million budget shortfall could soon balloon to $100 million, raising the prospect of devastating service cuts and leading city officials to privately discuss the prospect of bankruptcy. But City Council members are now backing away from the 'b-word,' saying such a discussion would be premature. As part of our "Facing Hard Times" series on the Northern California economy, we examine Oakland's budget crisis.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

  • Chip Johnson, columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle
  • David Gamage, assistant professor of law at UC Berkeley
