Caring for California's Developmentally Disabled

Download audio (MP3)

San Jose's Agnews Developmental Center will close its doors by the end of this week following 120 years of looking after developmentally disabled patients. With the current policy of moving residents to smaller community homes, the closure leaves only four such centers in the state. We take up the issue of housing and care for California's developmentally disabled.

Host: Dave Iverson

Guests:

  • Brian Boxall, president of the Association for the Mentally Retarded at Agnews
  • Joanie Pepper, parent of a former resident at Agnews Developmental Center
  • Kris McCann, executive director of the Bay Area Housing Corporation, created by the Bay Area Housing Plan to transition residents of Agnews to the community
  • Rocio De Mateo Smith, executive director of Area Board 5 of The State Council on Developmental Disabilities, an independent state agency ensuring that people with developmental disabilities and their families receive the services they need
  • Santi Rogers, executive director of the San Andreas Regional Center
