High and Dry: The California Drought

Download audio (MP3)

Water officials say California is facing a severe drought -- maybe the worst the state has ever seen. The Sierra snowpack is down, and January was unusually dry as California enters its third year of lower than normal rainfall. Officials are drawing up plans to require water rationing, possibly as early as this spring. We talk with a panel of experts about the threat.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

  • Jeff Mount, professor of geology and director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis
  • Paul Kelley, Sonoma County Water Agency supervisor and chairman of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors
  • Peter Gleick, president of The Pacific Institute
  • Wendy Martin, statewide drought coordinator for the California Department of Water Resources
