Cartoon: a man on a bus or train throws a face mask away while saying "hooray! Masks are strongly recommended!" A masked woman and child look on with concern.

Face masks are no longer required on any Bay Area public transit — but just because it's optional, you don't have to ditch your mask.

The California Department of Public Health still "strongly recommends" masking on public transit.

I want to lose the face masks just as much as the next person, but we should keep in mind this Grand Mask-Lifting was initiated by a judge's ruling, not by public health experts.
