Billy Wilder broke into films as a screenwriter in 1929 and wrote scripts for many German films. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Wilder first emigrated to Paris, then the US. Although he spoke no English when he arrived in Hollywood, Wilder was a fast learner, and was quickly able to break into American films. As a producer and director, Wilder created memorable films From Greta Garbo's Ninotchka, to the film noir classic Double Indemnity to his academy award winning classics Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment.
