Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North (Episode #2101)

KQED 9: Sun, Feb 12, 2012 -- 1:30 PM

First-time filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery -- her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U. S. history. She and nine fellow descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade -- from their old hometown in Rhode Island to slave forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba. Step by step, they uncover the vast extent of Northern complicity in slavery while also stumbling through the minefield of contemporary race relations. In this bicentennial year of the U.S. abolition of the slave trade, the film offers powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide.

Ella Es El Matador (She Is The Matador) (Episode #2209)

KQED World: Thu, Feb 9, 2012 -- 9:00 AM

For Spaniards - - and for the world - - nothing has expressed their country's traditionally rigid gender roles more powerfully than the image of the male matador. So sacred was the bullfighter's masculinity to Spanish identity that a 1908 law barred women from the sport. This film reveals the surprising history of the women who made such a law necessary and profiles two female matadors currently in the arena: the acclaimed Mari Paz Vega and neophyte Eva Florencia. These women are gender pioneers by necessity. But what emerges as their truest motivation is their sheer passion - - for bullfighting and the pursuit of a dream.

Bronx Princess (Episode #2212)

KQED World: Sat, Feb 4, 2012 -- 4:00 PM

Her precocious - - and very American - - ideas of a successful, independent life conflict with her father's traditional African values. Reconciling her dual legacies becomes an unexpected chapter in this unforgettable young woman's education.
