1964: The Fight for a Right Previous Broadcasts

KQED World: Tue, Jul 17, 2018 -- 6:00 PM

This documentary chronicles the struggles of African-Americans in 1960s Mississippi fighting for the right to vote. It explores the budding civil rights movement in the American South, examining the evolution of events that led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
By the mid-20th century, Mississippi's African Americans had suffered from nearly 75 years of Jim Crow discrimination. But in 1963, things began to change. A mock election known as the 1963 Freedom Vote was designed to prove that, given a fair opportunity, black people would register to vote and that they would participate on election day. The following summer, hundreds of young white volunteers converged in Mississippi and worked alongside local Civil Rights activists on a 10-week voter registration campaign, part of a larger movement called the Mississippi Summer Project, or Freedom Summer. The results of their efforts still reverberate.
This program weaves historical footage from this decade with interviews from Freedom Summer architects - including Bob Moses, leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on voter education and registration in Mississippi; the Rev. Edward King, a Freedom Summer organizer and civil rights veteran; and present day activists - to give context to American voting issues in the last 150 years through the events that took place in Mississippi.
