Van Gogh: Painted with Words Previous Broadcasts

KQED 9: Sun, Mar 27, 2016 -- 8:00 PM

Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Vincent Van Gogh to perfection in this powerful and critically acclaimed docudrama, with every single word of dialogue sourced from his original correspondence.
Based on years of painstaking research and faithful to his writings down to every last detail, this is Vincent Van Gogh's story, in his own words. For 18 years from 1872, Van Gogh chronicled his eventful life through some 900 letters to his younger brother Theo. It is a remarkable collection which, even if none of his paintings had survived, would have been enough to mark him out as an extraordinary figure in the art world.
This film weaves together the painter's recorded experiences into a compelling story, with each word spoken by the actors faithful to these original sources. What emerges is a complex portrait of a sophisticated, civilized and yet tormented man.
