Afghanistan: The Surge Previous Broadcasts

KQED World: Sun, Aug 26, 2012 -- 9:00 PM

If you want to know why the Afghanistan war has been so frustrating and seemingly without progress, watch this film. In it we see a platoon of skilled, motivated Marines filled with the best of intentions sent to a remote outpost to eliminate Taliban influence. It didn't work out that way. The Taliban didn't stand and fight. Instead, using simple IEDs, they crippled Marine mobility and kept Marines hemmed into a narrow valley while the Taliban ran things from its untouchable headquarters only eight miles from the Marine outpost. At a time when the Afghanistan war will be a central part of the presidential election, this film can be a part of that conversation.
