Hastings is invited to a grouse shoot which goes disastrously wrong when Archie Havering swings his gun too far round. With everyone in low spirits, the party begins to break up. Later that evening, a mystery figure arrives at Hunter's Lodge and murders Roger Havering in his gun room. Having taken to his bed at the local hotel with a high temperature, Poirot shakes off his illness to find the cold blooded murderer.

The Affair at the Victory Ball (Episode #309)

Radio star Coco Courtney is found dead from a cocaine overdose after attending a Victory Ball at which Poirot was also present, albeit not in costume. At the ball Poirot noticed Coco arguing with Viscount Cronshaw who was later found dead in the supper room with a table knife through his heart. Poirot and Inspector Japp's investigation concentrates on the search for a green pompom torn from Cronshaw's comedic costume.

On a visit to the opera, Poirot is approached by Lady Chatterton who asserts that the life of her friend, Marguerite Clayton, is threatened by her jealous husband. Edward Clayton is suspicious about a relationship between his wife and the handsome Major Rich. At a party thrown by Rich, the grizzly discovery is made of Edward Clayton's body in a large ornate chest. Is the Major guilty? Only Poirot is able to uncover the truth.

The Dream (Episode #110)

Poirot receives a note from wealthy pork pie manufacturer Benedict Farley urgently requesting a meeting. The elderly tycoon explains a recurring dream in which he commits suicide in the library at midday using a revolver. He asks whether Poirot has any experience of a victim being hypnotized into committing suicide Poirot has not. When Farley is found dead with a gun in his hand, Poirot is convinced that foul play is afoot.
