Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical received 8 Oscar nominations, winning for Best Cinematography, Best Music and Best Sound. The story is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka. Israeli actor Topol (Best Actor nominee) reprises his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Based on the book by Shalom Aleichem.
