In each episode, one vibrant young traveler ventures off the beaten path to soak up the local culture, sample the cuisine and revel in breathtaking vistas. In keeping with their aim of "living as the locals do," the charismatic hosts and others explore everything from big-city landmarks to exotic sights in remote villages.

Merrilees Parker, Padma Lakshmi, Tyler Florence and Peter Gordon travel the world to see how control of the spice trails has made great cities and destroyed ancient civilizations. Our guides travel from the Molucca Islands of Indonesia, the original home of cloves and nutmeg, to the Indian province of Kerala, with its native pepper and cardamom. Leaving behind Sri Lanka's sublime cinnamon, they cross the oceans on Arab dhows, Chinese treasure junks and Portuguese caravels, in search of the world's flavor. Other stops along the trail include Venice, Beirut, Cairo, China, Spain and the Caribbean. Viewers will discover the secret spice blends that define the great cuisines of the world, including Jamaican jerk seasoning, Indian garam masala, Chinese 5-spice powder and Middle Eastern harissa.

Holly kicks off her trip in Denver, where she visits the U.S. Mint and enjoys the city's many outdoor pursuits. Holly travels to Utah, home to numerous ski resorts, the Great Salt Lake and a plethora of breathtaking national parks - including Arches, Zion and Bryce Canyon.

Mid-Atlantic States (Episode #1214)

Brianna begins her travels in New Jersey with a visit to Atlantic City and Wildwoods on a 1950s themed weekend. Next it's on to Delaware, with stops in Lewes and Annapolis, followed by crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay. Brianna journeys through the Brandywine Valley, which stretches through Delaware and Pennsylvania, on her way to Philadelphia for a taste of the famous cheesesteaks and a look at the Art Museum. She continues west through Amish country, takes in the new Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville and checks out the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Brianna makes her way to Virginia, where she encounters a replica of Stonehenge made entirely from Styrofoam and concludes her trip at Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.
Food Hour: Vietnam (Episode #1213)
KQED World: Sat, Jul 6, 2013 -- 8:00 PM
Megan starts her culinary tour of Vietnam in the Mekong Delta. Her first stop is Ho Chi Minh City where she visits the Pho Binh noodle shop, which also served as a resistance headquarters during the Vietnam War. Next it's off to Hue in central Vietnam where Megan samples the region's "Imperial" cuisine and then travels to Hanoi. She treks further north to Bac Ha, attends a traditional banquet hosted by the Flower H'mong tribe and ends her journey with a seafood feast in the scenic Ha Long Bay.
