Asthma's Heavy Toll on East Bay Kids

A new Oakland Tribune.  analysis of health data from across the state shows that the asthma rate for children in five ZIP codes in Oakland and one in Emeryville are among the very highest in California. The disease is focused mostly in poor neighborhoods heavily effected by industrial pollution. 

KQED's Stephanie Martin spoke with Tribune reporter Katy Murphy about the many ways the high incidence of asthma effects the community, from health-care costs to kids' future in school. Murphy is the lead reporter on a new multimedia series which looks at the impact of asthma on Bay Area kids.
