Market Street

Irish engineer Jasper O'Farrell, who designed Market Street in 1847, would surely be proud of the excitement and commerce generated around this grand boulevard today. He surveyed the 120-foot-wide roadway diagonally to the existing street to the north, following the old Mission Trail that ran from Yerba Buena Cove to Mission Dolores.

Why O'Farrell was inspired to include a Champs Elysées-sized boulevard in his street plan is a mystery. Source: Walking San Francisco on the Barbary Coast Trail
