In
the mid-1840s, following defeat by Britain
in the first Opium War, a series of
natural catastrophes occurred across
China. When the news of gold and opportunity
in Gum San, (Golden Mountain- the Chinese
name for America) reached China, many
Chinese seized the opportunity to seek
their fortune. The newly arrived Chinese
congregated in a 14-square block area
of San Francisco and formed the first
Chinatown in America. Before and after
the 1906 disaster, Chinatown's history,
though lawless at times, reflects the
struggles of immigrants and the fight
against discriminatory legislation. |
