speak up

KQED.org sat down with mental health consumers, advocates, family members and professionals to listen to accounts of their personal experiences with mental illness. These eight individuals agreed to share their stories, although some requested anonymity to protect their own or loved one's privacy. All of the individuals we spoke with have experienced some sort of loss resulting from mental illness, but they also share stories of survival and hope.
