The Castro Photographs
Pictured here in his first campaign for San Francisco Supervisor,
Harvey Milk quickly became the spokesman for the gay community that formed
in The Castro. Milk was elected in his third try in 1977, becoming the
first openly gay elected city official in California.
The "Castro Clone" look became a distinguishing feature of
gay liberation in the 1970s, and signified a departure from previous stereotypes
of gay dress and appearance.
A corner of San Francisco became contested ground as the quiet, working-class
Eureka Valley neighborhood was transformed into "The Castro,"
a world renowned gay mecca, in the 1970s. Additional photo credit (photo not shown): Harvey Milk photo titled "Save Our Rights" by Jerome Pritikin, copyright 1977.
