DENTAL HEALTH
La Clinica de la Raza This Oakland-based clinic provides comprehensive services to its predominantly Latino community. La Clinica's dental director, Ariane Terlet, is a guest on the May 2003 Health Dialogues show.
Medical Care Services, California Department of Health Services Within the DHS, this is the lead agency responsible for administering Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program. Stan Rosenstein represents the Department on Health Dialogues.
The California Dental Access Project, The University of California, San Francisco The UCSF Center for Health Professions runs this Project. It published a report on the status of access to and quality of oral health services in California with recommendations for improvement. Health Dialogues guest, Beth Mertz directs the CDAP.
The Dental Health Foundation The goal of this Oakland-based non-profit organization is to promote community oral health through its projects in fluoridation, tobacco, children's dental health, and dental care access. Board member Dr. Jared Fine is a guest on Health Dialogues' Dental Health show.
California Chapters of the National Dental Association The NDA represents 7,000 African American dentists worldwide.

VIOLENCE AS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE
Childrens Hospital Oakland
Chidren's is Oakland's pediatric teaching hospital.
Homies Organizing the Mission to Empower Youth HOMEY tries to address the root causes of violence, by providing educational, cultural, economic and intervention programs to disenfranchised youth. Health Dialogues guest Henry Morales is HOMEY's economic development director.
The Trauma Foundation The Foundation's mission is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries as a result of accidents. Health Dialogues Guest Liz McLoughlin is its director of programs.
Asian Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center The API Center is based in Oakland and Hawaii. It conducts research on violence prevention in the API community.
Barrios Unidos Based in Santa Cruz, Barrios Unidos is a multicultural national nonprofit organization that aims to prevent youth violence.
Crime Victims with Disabilities Initiative The California Department of Mental Health administrates the CVDI. In addition to leading a public education campaign, it offers grants and provides training for initiatives that help crime victims with disabilities.
Youth Alive! Youth Alive's programs in Oakland and Los Angeles aim to prevent violence among young people through public education and peer mentoring.

MENOPAUSE
Women's Health Initiative In this study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), over 68,000 women participated in a controlled trial. At random, researchers assigned women to any or all of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), a low-fat diet, or calcium with Vitamin D. In July 2002, the NIH stopped part of the HRT trial because of a small but measurable increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, and breast cancer. Health Dialogues guest Marcia L. The Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center Based at the University of California, San Francisco, the Center specializes in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Health Dialogues guest Mindy Goldman directs its Follow-Up Program.
National Asian Women's Health Organization NAWHO runs an osteoporosis education project, an outreach effort designed to inform Asian American women about the diagnosis and treatment of age-related bone density loss.
Women's Health Resource Center The Univeristy of California, San Francisco offers health informtion to women of all walks of life through the Center. This page is a reading list for women who want to find out more about menopause. Listed is a book written by Health Dialogues guest Lonnie Barbach.
American Heart Association On their site, the AHA presents easy-to-understand health information for women concerned about cardiovascular disease -- the leading cause of death in women, far ahead of cancer.

WHAT'S IN OUR DRINKING WATER?
Natural Resources Defence Council NRDC is a national non-profit environmental advocacy organization with regional offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In October 2002, they released California-related parts of "What's on Tap?," a report card on drinking water quality in America's major cities. Health Dialogues guest Gina Solomon, is a senior scientist at the Council.
Southern California Metropolitan Water District The MWD is a coalition of water districts and municipalities that serve 17 million people in six southern California counties. Health Dialogues guest Mark Beuhler is the District's associate vice president for water quality strategies.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency The EPA is a federal agency with responsibilities that include regulating surface and groundwater pollution. Health Dialogues guest Bruce Macler is a drinking water toxicologist for the the Agency's ninth region -- the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada, the Pacific islands and many tribal nations. International Bottled Water Federation The IBWA is the bottled water industry's trade organization. They represent bottlers, distributors and suppliers worldwide.
State Assembly Bill 83 On January 6, 2003, State Assembly Member Ellen Corbett introduced this bill that would require water vending machines and bottling facilities to provide the same disclosures and undergo the same inspections as public water systems. Additionally, it would hold vendors and bottlers responsible for the cost of imlementation.
State Senate Bill 50 On January 9, 2003, State Senator Byron Sher from Stanford introduced this bill that would express the Legislature's intent to pass a bill similar to AB 83.
California DHS Drinking Water Programs The California Department of Health Services is responsible for enforcing state and federal Safe Drinking Water Acts. On this page, you will find instructions on how to get results of their public water systems' water quality analyses.

CHILD NUTRITION
The Center for Weight and Health Based at the University of California, Berkeley, the Center performs reseach on the effectiveness of programs that address weight-related diseases. Health Dialogues guest Pat Crawford co-directs the center.
California Center for Public Health Advocacy
In December 2002, this non-profit organization released a report by State Assembly district showing the prevelence of overweightness and poor conditioning in California's children. Its executive director, Harlold Goldstein, is a guest on Health Dialogues.
Stanford Center on Adolescence The Center on Adolescence performs multidisciplinary research on childhood development. Health Dialogues guest Thomas Robinson is a faculty member there.
California State Senate standing committee on Health and Human Services
State Senator Deborah Ortiz chairs the Senate standing committee on Health and Human Services.
Project Lean The California Department of Health Services and the Public Health Institute administer Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition. It directs a number of research, education and advocacy projects, relating to healthy diet and activity including Food on the Run, a program that trains high school students to advocate for better nutrition and more opportunities for physical exercise.
American Sports Institute ASI is a nonprofit organization that directs projects with the goal of promoting sports and physical education.

Program Evaluation and Resource Center, Department of Veterans Affairs Based at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, PERC studies the outcomes and effectiveness of substance abuse treatment programs across the entire VA system. Health Dialogues guest panelist Keith Humphreys, is its director.
Community Substance Abuse Services, San Francisco Department of Health This San Francisco harm reduction agency administrates city drug and alchohol rehabilitation policy and offers treatment programs. Health Dialogues panelist Jorge Partida, serves as its director.
The Family Recovery Project, The Mental Research Institute Palo Alto's MRI studies the role families play in successful acoholism rehabilitation. Health Dialogues panelist Stephanie Brown co-directs this project.
Union of Pan Asian Communities San Diego-based UPAC runs alcohol and drug prevention and treatment programs serving local Asian Pacific American communities.
Friendship House Association of American Indians Friendship house runs holistic alcohol and drug treatment programs serving the San Francisco Bay Area's Native American community.

California Association of Health Plans This trade organization represents health insurers in California. Health Dialogues guest Dr. Walter Zelman heads the Association.
San Francisco General Hospital Department of Family and Community Medicine SFGH is San Francisco's main public hospital. Health Dialogues guest Dr. Kevin Grumbach, heads its Department of Family and Community Medicine.
Sacramento Health Decisions This non-profit research group in Sacramento tries to measure public opinion on health care decisions in California. Their Visible Fairness project used surveys and group fora to better articulate society's values. Health Dialogues guest Marjorie Ginsburg is its executive director.
Health Priorities Group Based in Berkeley, this consulting group advises government agencies, insurers and providers on ethical matters in health care. They also publish the Ethical Issues in Managed Care Quarterly. Health Dialogues guest Dr. John Golenski leads the Group.
Health Access This nonprofit coalition of public interest groups advocates health care reform leading to universal health care coverage. Health Dialogues has arranged to speak with its Executive Director, Anthony Wright, by telephone.
Disability Rights Advocates Oakland-based DRA's Health Access Project educates individuals in the health care system about the rights of people with disabilities. They provide many of their training and information resources free of charge.
Consumers Union The publisher of Consumer Reports serves as an information clearinghouse for consumers in many sectors, including health care. They also lobby state and federal legislatures and regulatory agencies. Their San Francisco office serves the Western portion of the United States.

THE POLITICS OF HEALTH
The California Health Care Options Project A 1999 state law mandates this project. Its purpose is to analyze different health care reforms aimed at extending insurance coverage for Californians. It studied nine different reform options. You can download the analyses through their "Documents Library" link.
Liberterian Party of California A California "third party" announced its 2000 health care platform on this site. Their most recent platform was not available as of the time of posting this link.
Green Party California This California "third party" posts its health care platform on this Web site.
Bill Simon for Governor The Republican gubernatorial candidate posts his statements on health care on this Web site.
The Governor Gray Davis Committee The incumbent Democratic governor posts his statements on health care on this Web site.
Center for Health And Public Policy Studies The Univeresity of California, Berkeley School of Public Health operates this research center, headed by Health Dialogues guest Panelist, Helen Schauffler. Activities center around health insurance policy, tobacco control, Medicaid managed care and other public policy issues.
Wellpoint Health Networks Wellpoint is a for-profit health insurer made up of Blue Cross companies operating in California, Missouri and Georgia. Health Dialouges panelist Robert Scarlett represents Wellpoint.
California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO The California Labor Federation is a politically active statewide coalition of labor unions. Health Dialogues panelist Art Pulaski represents this organization.

DEATH AND DYING
With Eyes Open With Eyes Open is a television documentary series that asks us to begin the difficult task of contemplating our own mortality. The 4-part series includes honest discussions about caregiving, grief, difficult decisions and what may lie beyond death. Hosted by veteran journalist Ray Suarez, these programs invite viewers to look at the end of life with eyes open, and by doing so make their lives more meaningful. "With Eyes Open" is part of the KQED-produced Bay Window series.
California Coalition for Compassionate Care The Coalition is an umbrella organization for groups promoting better palliative and end-of-life care. They direct CHIPS, The California Hospital Initiative in Palliative Care, a program to develop palliative care programs in 40 hospitals throughout California.
Access to End of Life Care Access is a community-based organization with a mission of improving end-of-life care services in culturally diverse communities in San Franicso through educating both families and health care providers.
Initiative to Improve Palliate Care for African Americans This advocacy organization seeks advancement in palliative care research, education, and public policy in the African-American community. They are based in New York City and at Stanford University.
San Diego Hospice This non-profit organization provides a wide range of hospice care services in San Diego County. It is also home of the University of California, San Diego-affiliated Center for Palliative Studies
Comprehensive Care Team Based at University of California, San Francisco, the Comprehensive Care Team uses an interdisciplinary approach to help dying patients and their families cope. The web site features the artwork of patients who have participated in their program.
American Cancer Society - Northern California Chinese Unit This site offers Chinese-language information from the American Cancer Society.
Completing a Life The Michigan State University Palliative Care and Education Research Program created this website. It offers a step-by-step, interactive, practical guide on managing many end-of-life health care issues, complete with audio narration.

MENTAL HEALTH AND JUVENILE OFFENDERS
KQED Juvenile Justice Project KQED's Education Network, Radio and Television collaborated on this stationwide project. The multimedia Web site looks at juvenile justice issues from a wide variety of perspectives.
Youth Law Center

This public interest law organization investigates abuse of incarcerated youth. Its web site provides links to other organizations and summarizes the cases they have litigated in efforts to reform jails, detention centers and other institutions.

The Little Hoover Commission This independent state oversight agency examines government operations for effectiveness and efficiency. You can download their recent children's mental health report on their Web site.
The Office of the Surgeon General The Office of the Surgeon General runs the Federal government's Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and acts as a spokesperson on health care issues. The Office held a conference on children's mental health outlining eight major goals for the country. You can download the conference's report on its Web site.
National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice The small business Policy Research Associates receives public and private grants to be an information clearinghouse on mental health and juvenile justice issues. They also test promising policy innovations through pilot projects and present their findings to the public in hopes that successful projects can serve as a model for law enforcement agencies nationwide. They are organizing a conference on co-occurring disorders (mental illness and substance abuse) in criminal justice this October in San Francisco.

THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY
Public Citizen Public citizen is a non-profit watchdog group monitoring the pharmaceutical and other industries. They also have a center in California, which is not as active in health care issues.
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America

PhRMA is a national pharmaceutical industry trade group. They also have a searchable directory of pharmaceutical company assistance programs.

NeedyMeds NeedyMeds provides an online resource guide to help low-income patients seek assistance from pharmaceutical company assistance plans.
Medicare Prescription Drug Assistance Programs Medicare, the federal health insurance plan, maintains a search engine of private and public programs designed to help patients with limited means obtain prescription drugs.
Medline Plus Drug Information The federal government's biomedical research agency runs this site. It's a comprehensive directory of prescription and over the counter medications. You can find out what they do, how to take them, how much to take, their side effects, and other information.
FDA Consumer Drug Information One of the FDA's departments lists consumer information on recently approved prescription drugs. It is a useful resource on new medications that may be unfamiliar to home health professionals.

HEALTH LITERACY
California Literacy This non-profit organization is launching its Health Literacy Initiative, an effort to promote health literacy. The executive director of the group will be unveiling the project at the May 9 conference.
California Patient's Guide This guide is intended to inform patients of their rights to receive quality health care and what steps they can take if they encounter problems. It was prepared by the Foundation for Taxpayer & Consumer Rights.
Health Rights Hotline The Health Rights Hotline provides free assistance to residents of Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado and Placer counties. They also provide educational materials for people who wish to learn more about navigating the health care system. Their web site also has useful links to a variety of health information sites.
Intelihealth Owned by Aetna, this site features consumer health information from Harvard Medical School.

MedlinePlus This web site provides medical information from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

California Nurses Association The largest organization of registered nurses in California, with over 38,000 members.
UC San Francisco Center for the Health Professions Sponsors research and programs designed to help schools and health care organizations educate and manage a skilled health care workforce.
All Nursing Schools Features a searchable directory of nursing education programs in California and throughout the country.
American Association of Colleges of Nursing Follow the link "Nursing Shortage Resource" for information on the nursing shortage and efforts being made by nursing schools to address the problem.
