ABOUT HEALTH DIALOGUES Overview Programming Background Staff Partner Stations Tapes and CDs About The California Report Underwriting Overview Health Dialogues, a special series from KQED Public Radio's The California Report, engages listeners in an ongoing discussion of California health care issues that are important to the underserved: children, low-income residents, minorities, people with disabilities, immigrants, and rural and migrant worker communities in particular. The series seeks to generate and facilitate dialogue between communities, health care providers and policy-makers. back to top Programming The centerpieces of the Health Dialogues series are monthly, one-hour call-in shows. The call-in programs air on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm on public radio stations throughout the state. Host Scott Shafer moderates a discussion between a panel of experts and listeners, who can call in toll-free from anywhere in the state to voice their opinions in a public forum. Topics range from the state of hospital solvency, to health literacy, to drug abuse treatment policies and programs. The monthly call-in programs are complemented by special reports during the morning edition of The California Report, as well as by local programming produced at partner stations throughout the state. back to top Background In June 1999, The California Endowment awarded The California Report a grant to launch Health Dialogues, a 16-part series of monthly one-hour call-in shows. Each installment began with an in-depth news story about the topic to be discussed. Afterward, the host, Scott Shafer, moderated group discussions between experts and listeners, who could call in from anywhere in the state to voice their opinions in a public forum. Topics ranged from HMO Reform to Alternative Medicine to Diversity in Physician Education. The last installment of the first Health Dialogues cycle was broadcast in December 2000. The California Endowment renewed and expanded this grant for another two-year cycle. back to top Staff
