Who was Huey P. Newton many might ask? The co-founder of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s was an educated man who played classical piano, wrote poetry, earned several advanced degrees, and advocated social and economic equality, the carrying of non-concealed rifles, Black Power and revolution. He is feared by and remains a mystery to many even today. Few in the mainstream remember his breakfast programs, sickle cell anemia testing, and emphasis on education. Most remember the carrying of guns and calls to violence. He lived in turbulent times, not unlike today, and tried to bring actions and ideas about freedom and justice to peoples he felt were discriminated against and exploited.
