Excerpt from "Endangered Species"

I read books when I don't want to be interactive - I spend more than enough time with the phone/fax/copier/computer/answering machine/ meowing cat/noisy washing machine/humming refrigerator/radio/TV/ my problems/your problems - I spend enough time interacting - quiet time is what I crave, can never have enough of - just me and my book, heavy in hand, crisp smell of new ink, crack of the spine, ssshhh quiet - pages turning - ssshhh listen it's the sound of an active imagination churning
