Children and Asthma

Asthma is an important health issue for more than 5 million children in the United States. The following lessons will:

  • help your students understand what causes asthma.
  • give your students information about precautions they can take.
  • show your students why it's so important to recognize the symptoms.

These creative lessons are correlated to California State Standards in health and language arts for grades 6 through 12.

Living With Asthma
Overview
The purpose of this lesson is to encourage students to examine how living with asthma impacts the lives of young people. In this lesson, students will read a real-life account of a person living with asthma, learn why people were offended by the way in which a character with asthma was portrayed in the movie Jimmy Neutron, and develop an idea for generating civic awareness about asthma.

Childhood Asthma
Overview
The purpose of this lesson is to encourage students to examine the rise in the incidence of childhood asthma in the United States. In this lesson, students will view the KQED program Bay Window: Children and Asthma, research the topic of asthma, write a public service announcement for childhood asthma and create a radio news program on asthma.

Asthma Awareness
Overview

The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn about asthma and share their knowledge with the school and the local community. In this lesson, students will view the program Children and Asthma, write research reports on asthma and use this knowledge to produce a schoolwide Asthma Education Fair.
