Jane
Cutler has been writing children's books for 10 years. In 1994, she
wrote "My Wartime Summers," whose child heroine comes to a realization
of what war truly is. Cutler was 5 years old when World War II broke out.
One of her uncles served in the war and when she saw him again upon his
return, he came home a changed man. The once jovial uncle was emptied
out, as if something had died inside of him. Her new book, "The Cello
of Mr. O," is her most moving story to date. It is a children's picture
book about an unspecified war taking place, and the courage of one man
in perilous circumstances. Her goal is to get adults and children to think
and talk about war together.
Children's author Jane Cutler believes that art has a moral imperative
to not only teach children about war but also to ask them how they feel
about war.
Do you think children should
be exposed to the realities of war at an early age? In what forms?
