Governor's Race:

Software Contract and Davis Administration
The California Report Weekly Magazine
Originally broadcast May 3, 2002
Governor Davis's administration is embroiled in controversy over a $95 million state contract with Silicon Valley software maker Oracle -- a deal state auditors say could saddle taxpayers with $41 million for software that state agencies don't want. On Thursday, the Governor suspended the Director of the Department of Information Technology and called in state troopers to prevent the shredding of documents. The crackdown came after a technology advisor admitted accepting $25,000 for Davis's re-election campaign from an Oracle representative during the middle of software contract negotiations. Now Oracle has offered to let the state out of the contract, but the controversy shows no signs of going away. From Silicon Valley, Peter Jon Shuler has more.
