"Hope is key, but you can't buy hope with dollars for millionaires you have to earn the hope for the dream through years of service. I have earned it by building trust with the people of California."
On pro-choice Republicans:
"The women I talk to . . . (are) concerned about safe streets, good education and jobs for their children. I reject the fact that just because . . . we may be pro-life, we don't care about women. That's not true, that's never been true and it's not true today."
On contributions to Democrats:
"I take offense to those giving thousands of dollars to Kennedy in Maryland to win an election as the highest ranking Republican in California. And it is a fair issue especially given Dick's background in giving to all these Democrats and the question really is is it just the contribution or a philosophical support of the positions the Kennedys hold and other Democrats hold? ÉThat is a legitimate point for the Republican party to ask."
On the environment:
"Growth is the problem that we are dealing with for all of us and we have to find ways to mitigate it. My record on the environment is clear. I was the author of the Food Safety Act of '88 and I was also the co-author of the Safe Drinking Water Act of '89. All of these measures work to make sure that California has strong environmental laws in the future."

"Lower taxes, smaller government close to the people and focused on public safety and education . . . schools that teach basics, reading, writing, math and character . . . and respect for the traditional values that have always made life in California so great."
On pro-choice Republicans:
"This is the first time I've heard that someone who's pro-life can't be pro-kids. Actually, I think it's the other way around. I've been reaching out to women for a long time. ... I have five sisters."
On the environment:
"What we need to do is balance property rights and animal rights and I think too often it is not based on sound science and I would look to sound science to tell us the way in any environmental issues."

"The main subject is how do we get rid of this disgraceful governor Gray Davis? We need to have a united party. We can differ. You can't have a platform that says women who are pro-choice can't be part of the party. You need to respect the differences. You need to bring women, minorities and others into the power of the Republican Party if we are going to have a future in California."
On pro-choice Republicans:
"This is a shorthand way for women to say 'if someone is not pro-choice, they're not pro-after-school care, they're not pro-day care for children, they're not pro-health care. There is no way that a Republican can win in this state unless they respect women who are pro-choice, unless they say they are not going to put that in the Republican platform and tell women we don't want you to be Republicans."
On the environment:
"I settled the Mono Lake dispute after 50 yearsÉ I spent tens of millions of dollars to clean up the dust problem in Owens ValleyÉ There has to be a balance. We are only building about half of the housing that we needÉ"
