"Fewer crime victims, better educated children, healthier families and an economy that's strong enough to generate jobs for all that want them."

On Leadership:
"It's not good enough to hire the best and the brightest; you have to have some vision of leadership."

On Abortion:
[As Row vs. Wade has been ruled on by the Supreme Court and is a federal issue] "There is little that Gray Davis, or (a) Gov. Jones, could do."

"My track record shows I care about people (and) I care about issues."

On Abortion:
"I am pro-life. I believe abortion is wrong."

On the Budget Deficit:
"I am a proud conservative Republican, and I will not raise taxes to balance the budget."

"The answer to government, to security, to anything, is leadership or management -- empowering people to do a job."

On Leadership:
"What I would do is bring the best and brightest people I can find in the world to help me solve those problems and I would empower them to do it."

On Abortion:
"I happen to believe that a woman has a right to make her own decisions as to her body and to her life, but I respect people who are pro-life. And I would hope that in the Republican Party, we would respect each other, even though we disagree."

On Energy:
"We [L.A.] supplied energy to the rest of the state at costs less than other suppliers. We could have sold that energy outside the state at higher cost."
