6:00 amAlan Alda in Scientific American Frontiers [#1405] The Dark Side of the Universe Alan Alda joins some of the world's leading astronomers as they wrestle with the startling implications of their latest discoveries: that everything we can see, from the world around us to the most distant galaxies, is only a tiny fraction of the entire cosmos. Most of what's out there is dark - either dark matter or dark energy. And our universe is perhaps only one in an infinity of universes. duration 56:46 STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)

7:00 amGuardian of the Gates: The Surfboats This documentary takes a look at one of the elite Coast Guard Search &Rescue crews that conduct over 600 rescues a year. Filmed at the nation's second busiest Coast Guard station - located right next to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco - it gets an inside look at what makes these search and rescuers put their lives on the line every day. Produced and Directed by David Wittkower. duration 57:31 STEREO TVG

8:00 amGreen Buildings - Ecosense for Living This new episode, Green Buildings: EcoSense for Living, profiles homes, a school and even the third busiest sports and concert venue in the nation to illustrate how energy efficient buildings reduce our carbon footprint in remarkable ways. Atlanta's Phillips Arena was retrofitted with energy efficient systems and it now uses 21% less electricity than other arenas of similar size and the energy the facility saves in one year could power 111 private homes. This episode also profiles Arabia Mountain High School which focuses on environmental learning throughout its curricula using Promethean boards (to reduce paper and enhance learning), outdoor classrooms, and even energy- and water-efficient rest rooms. Green Buildings compares modular, new, completely green homes to modified older homes with energy efficient systems and opens by touring the Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC for a glimpse of the cutting edge green building designs being developed across the globe. Sponsored by the Department of Energy, the Decathlon is a competition showcasing design and designers, many of them college students, from Germany to California. Hosted by Jennie Garlington. duration 26:46 TVG

8:30 amNew Environmentalists: From Kenya to the Arctic Circle This program features portraits of six passionate and dedicated activists.
