    American Masters [#2502] Cab Calloway: Sketches "Hi de hi de hi de ho," the popular refrain from "Minnie the Moocher" was Cab Calloway's signature song and Harlem's famous Cotton Club was his home stage. A singer, dancer and band leader, Calloway was an exceptional figure in the history of jazz -- a consummate musician, he charmed audiences across the world with boundless energy, bravado and elegant showmanship. His back glide dance step is the precursor to Michael Jackson's moonwalk and his scatting lyrics find their legacy in today's hip-hop and rap. An ambassador for his race, Calloway was the first black musician to tour the segregationist South, as early as 1932. At the top of his game in the jazz and swing eras of the 30s and 40s, he toured as Sportin' Life in Porgy and Bess, forever putting his personal stamp on "It Ain't Necessarily So."     Evening with Berry Gordy Journalist Gwen Ifill Iinterviews entrepreneur, songwriter, record producer, movie director and producer Berry Gordy. Gordy has left an indelible influence on music and films both nationally and internationally. Performing one tribute song from Gordy's musical career, representing the old and new school Motown, are Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson) and R & B musician KEM. Gordy's son, Stefan Gordy -- known to the music world as Redfoo -- one-half of the hip-hop musical group, LMFAO, is in attendance. Gordy began in Detroit where he founded Motown Records in 1959 and grew the company into the most successful African American-owned enterprise in the United States. He began writing and selling songs that were recorded by several local artists. In 1960, Motown released the song "Shop Around" recorded by The Miracles with Smokey Robinson on lead vocals. The song helped to launch the most influential era in the history of popular music. Motown quickly turned out successive hits by signing and grooming recording artists such as Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. duration 56:46   STEREO TVPG

    Diana Ross: For One and For All "It took me a lifetime to get here, and I'm not going anywhere." On July 21, 1983, the legendary Diana Ross took the stage in New York's Central Park before an audience of more than 800,000 adoring fans. Soon after the singer began, pouring rain and heavy wind threatened to put an end to the show, but Diana pushed on for much of the set, urging the drenched crowd to remain calm and stay with her. Eventually the torrential storm put an end to the performance, but not before Diana promised her fans she would return the next day. True to her word, Diana performed the entire concert again on July 22nd for the people of New York and, as planned, proceeds from the concert benefited the Diana Ross Playground, which was built three years later in Central Park. duration 1:59:11   STEREO TVPG

The first three shows demonstrate and explain three to four new postures or exercises per show. The last two shows serve as review so the viewer has a chance to make certain they followed and understood correctly. In addition, if the viewer missed a show, the Thursday and Friday review days bring them up-to-date. At the onset, the program is strictly teaching the "building blocks" of yoga exercise. As the series progresses, the work becomes more demanding.
