Halsted This is the true story of the most important surgeon America has ever produced. Surgery in the mid-19th Century consisted of crude and hurried amputations conducted in filthy operating rooms, often followed by horrendous infection. We can thank William Stewart Halsted, the pioneering father of American surgery, for bringing America into the era of safe surgery: sterile procedures, surgical gloves, careful handling of tissues, and local anesthesia. It was Halsted who introduced a scientific approach to medicine, but one set of experiments nearly ended his life and career. One set of experiments cost Halsted his reputation, his friendships, and his piece of mind. Halsted tried the new wonder drug cocaine as a local anesthetic and became addicted for life. This is the remarkable true story of the medical giant who brought America into the age of modern medicine while struggling with a secret addiction. duration 54:38   STEREO (Secondary audio: DVI)

The last two shows serve as review so the viewer has a chance to make certain they followed and understood correctly. American Masters [#1704] Judy Garland: By Myself Judy Garland had one of the most photographed faces ever to come out of Hollywood - it is stamped as a virtual imprint on our imaginations, a celluloid image frozen in time. She also had one of the most frequently recorded voices of the last century. She was magic, almost mythical. She is as iconic as she is misunderstood. There were her problems, to be sure, but the proof is in the performances, from The Wizard of Oz to the Palladium, from the Oscars to the Grammies. With singular entree to the MGM library, including vaulted screen tests and rehearsal footage, the film is wrapped in Judy's voice, actually telling her story in her own words. So many outsiders have tried to tell this story and so many friends and family have weighed in - now Judy gets center stage, all to herself. This is her ultimate comeback. duration 1:56:46   STEREO TVPG
