Healing A.D.D. with Dr. Daniel Amen ADD or ADHD is a national health crisis that continues to grow-yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly treated illnesses today. Kids and adults are put on powerful stimulant medications in short office visits without any biological information, and the stories of these medications hurting children and adults are common and persistent.
In this national public television program, psychiatrist Daniel Amen and his wife nurse Tana Amen take a completely new look at ADD and explain 7 unique types based on the extensive brain imaging work of the Amen Clinics on tens of thousands of ADD patients. Treating all people with ADD the same invites failure and frustration and can be a disaster, as the traditional treatments that make two of the types better can make the other 5 types worse.
The show is divided into three parts. In Part One, the myths and misconceptions about ADD will be discussed as well as the hallmark ADD symptoms. In Part Two, the 7 different types of ADD will be described in detail. And, in Part Three Dr. and Mrs. Amen we'll give you a clear method for Healing ADD, including the best natural treatments. Heal Yourself: Mind Over Medicine with Lissa Rankin, MD This special is based on the 2013 New York Times bestselling book, Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof that Your Can Heal Yourself by Lissa Rankin, MD. It is a meticulously researched explanation of the critical role our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs play in our health and wellbeing - and how we can harness the power of our minds to enjoy great health and longevity with specific, easy-to-do steps.
Part 1 covers topics such as why Western medicine is very important; your brain is most important organ for your health; "Learned helplessness"; and asking what does your body need in order to heal?
Part 2 includes an explanation of the placebo effect with examples; explanation of the nocebo effect and of the role the amygdala plays in the brain and how it controls stress; understanding how the body has its own self-repair mechanisms, which are under the influence of the nervous system; and why the body's self-repair mechanisms only work when the relaxation response is activated.
Part 3 covers the importance of reducing stress response for self-healing and optimal health; Dr. Rankin's groundbreaking new wellness model: The Whole Health Cairn; why physical health is only one aspect of whole health; the difference between being healed and being cured; and healing ourselves, healing health care.
Dr. Rankin is a trained ob-gyn who has emerged as one of the newest thought leaders in the mind/body medicine arena. Her work has been featured extensively in national media, including O magazine, The New York Times, CNN, Health, Women's Health, Self, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. She is also the founder of The Whole Health Medicine Institute, dedicated to teaching doctors how to provide truly integrative health and wellness to patients. Its Board includes Dr. Bernie Siegel, Dr. Larry Dossey and Dr. Christiane Northrup, who says about Lissa, "What a pleasure it is to see the next generation of physicians waking up to what I call real medicine - the kind that acknowledges our true power to heal and be well."

    Net Neutrality Picks Up Speed
Earlier this week, demonstrators protested at Google in Mountain View. They want the Internet to remain open, without access fees or censorship by Internet service providers. The concept is known as "net neutrality." The issue is heating up now because the FCC is again considering new rules for the Internet, and the public comment period ends July 15. The issue gained high speed momentum after comedian John Oliver highlighted it recently on his HBO show, "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." It generated so many comments to the FCC that the agency's website crashed.

    150 Years of Yosemite
When President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act in 1864, he set aside the first public lands in the country for "use, resort and recreation." An exhibit opening June 30 at the California Historical Society examines the human stories that are part of Yosemite's history -- 150 years of beauty, exploration, environmentalism and even tragedy. Historian Dr. Anthea Hartig shares some of these stories with Scott Shafer.

    Redwood Burl Poaching
Last week, a northern California man was convicted of felony vandalism and ordered to pay more than $11,000 for stealing part of a tree. He's the second person to be convicted this month of chopping burl off a redwood in a national park. Burls are knobby, bulbous growths often found near the base of the trunk, and are prized for their beautiful color and grain. One burl can sell for hundreds to thousands of dollars. But burls are also crucial to the long-term survival of redwood groves and their theft from park areas is illegal. From our partners at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, producer Sally Schilling looks at why this environmental crime is prompting alarm and a crackdown. (*Correction: We misspelled the name of the videographer in the production credits. The correct spelling is Courtney Quirin.)
